About Us

The Eastern Sun Dojo is based in traditional Shotokan Karate. We have added useful techniques from other systems to our basic and advanced classes for diversity. We strive for the elements of courtesy and respect. Our intent is to build and sustain character, self confidence and humility in our students.

Our instructor
Sensei John Liszewski started training under Sensei William Hodgkiss in 1969 at the Bucks County YMCA. He moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the late 70's and held a few small classes there until he was asked to start a Karate program at the Talbot County YMCA.

Eleven years later, he transferred to Connecticut with work. Sensei John trained at the JKA Shotokan Dojo in Wallingford. (Sensei Jimmy Cogneta) and attended several JKA camps that were overseen by Sensei's Mori and Torio. (New York and Boston)

Ten years later he moved back to the Eastern Shore and Caroline County. Sensei's Jack Gehring and Randy Tucker (Yudansha from Sensei John Liszewski's Easton Dojo) were teaching for Rec and Parks but were suspending the classes to persue other interests. He arrived just in time to take over. Now in the 16th year, Eastern Sun Dojo averages around 25 students and assistants.

Sensei Liszewski and his wife Terry (4th-Dan) are Reiki level 3 masters and several students have various Reiki levels. We are part of the Reiki Volunteer program at Easton Memorial Hospital, a division of the University of Maryland Hospital system.
